Piastri Extends Title Lead as Norris Retires from Dutch GP

Oscar Piastri strengthened his grip on the Formula 1 title race with a commanding victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, while his McLaren teammate and closest rival Lando Norris suffered a devastating retirement just seven laps from the finish.

The 24-year-old Australian was flawless from pole to flag at Zandvoort, surviving light rain and three safety-car restarts to take a dominant win. His victory, combined with Norris’s misfortune, opens up a 34-point lead in the drivers’ standings with nine races remaining.

Norris had looked set to finish second and limit the damage in the championship battle when disaster struck. An oil leak filled his cockpit with smoke, forcing him to stop trackside and watch helplessly as his title hopes took a heavy blow. “It hurts a bit for sure in a championship point of view,” Norris admitted. “It’s a lot of points to lose so quickly and so easily.”

Lewis Hamilton’s race also ended in disappointment after an uncharacteristic mistake sent his Ferrari into the barriers on lap 21. Despite the crash, Hamilton remained upbeat about the progress he felt the team had made heading into Monza.

Behind Piastri, Max Verstappen secured second for Red Bull, while rookie Isack Hadjar celebrated his first ever F1 podium with third for Racing Bulls. George Russell finished fourth for Mercedes, ahead of Alex Albon’s Williams in fifth.

With momentum swinging heavily in Piastri’s favour, Norris now faces a crucial test of resilience as the championship battle heads to Monza.
