Governor Vows Legal Action
Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed that 300 California National Guard members have been ordered to Oregon by President Trump. He criticized the decision as an overreach of federal authority and said California will pursue legal measures to halt the deployment. Newsom asserted that the administration is relying on California troops to circumvent a court ruling that blocked Oregon’s own Guard from being mobilized.
Court Blocks Oregon Troops
The deployment follows a temporary restraining order issued by U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, preventing 200 Oregon Guard members from being sent to Portland. The ruling, effective until at least October 18, raised constitutional concerns about using military personnel in domestic law enforcement.
Partial Deployment Reported, Federal Authorities Silent
Oregon officials reported that more than 100 California Guard troops arrived late Saturday, with additional forces expected in the coming days. The Pentagon has not publicly confirmed the movement, and state leaders said they had not received formal notice. The situation has escalated tensions between state authorities and the Trump administration over the scope of presidential authority to deploy National Guard units outside their home states.
