Sir David Attenborough’s new BBC series Kingdom features extraordinary footage, including a lion rescuing a pregnant hyena from wild dogs.
Filmed over five years in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley, the documentary follows four rival predators — lions, hyenas, leopards and wild dogs — showcasing both brutal and tender moments of life in the wild.
Executive producer Mike Gunton said: “Only nature could write this script.” The series also captures a wild dog escaping a crocodile and a hyena hiding stolen food underwater to mask its scent.
Narrated by Attenborough, Kingdom highlights the growing impact of humans through habitat loss and snare traps. Scientific adviser Dr Matthew Becker said the footage is vital for conservation: “We got information we’d never have otherwise.”
Despite the threats, the series offers hope. “It’s a challenge,” said series editor Simon Blakeney, “but it’s not hopeless.”
