US Forces Arrest Maduro in Stunning Move, Trump Declares Temporary Control of Venezuela

In a dramatic and unprecedented operation, US forces arrested Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas and transported them to New York to face criminal charges. The surprise move has sent shockwaves around the world and marked a major escalation in US involvement in the country.

President Donald Trump announced that Washington would take temporary control of Venezuela until a safe and “judicious” transition of power could be arranged. “We can’t take a chance that somebody else takes over Venezuela who doesn’t have the good of the Venezuelan people in mind,” Trump said during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

    Washington Assumes Interim Leadership

Trump said the US would manage Venezuela with a designated team, naming Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine as key figures. Despite repeated questions, Trump provided few details on how the interim administration would function.

At one point, he claimed Venezuela’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, had been sworn in as Maduro’s successor and was “willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again.” However, Venezuelan authorities have not confirmed any such swearing-in.

Trump also suggested that US companies would help rebuild Venezuela’s damaged oil infrastructure. “We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies… spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, and start making money for the country,” he said. He added that a “second and much larger attack” could be launched if necessary.

    Legal Justification Sparks Debate

US Secretary of State Rubio defended the operation as a law enforcement action supported by the military that did not require Congressional approval. Maduro, he said, had been indicted in the US in 2020 and was a fugitive with a $50 million reward on his head. Trump noted Congress had not been informed to avoid leaks.

The move drew swift criticism from Democrats. Senator Mark Warner warned that such actions could set a dangerous precedent, arguing that if the US claims the right to abduct foreign leaders, other countries could justify similar operations elsewhere. Warner also criticized the administration for apparent hypocrisy, comparing the Venezuela operation to Trump’s pardon of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who had been convicted of serious drug trafficking charges in the US.

    Support, Risks, and Uncertain Outcomes

Republicans largely backed the operation. Senator Roger Wicker praised Trump for a “successful mission” to bring Maduro to justice, calling it the culmination of months of efforts to weaken criminal networks tied to his government.

Yet analysts warned the intervention could destabilize Venezuela. Daniel DePetris, a fellow at the Defense Priorities think tank, said the country could face military splits, an expansion of criminal groups, civil war, or the rise of a new autocrat. “Whether that change will be positive or negative in the long term remains to be seen,” he said.

The rationale for US pressure on Maduro has shifted over recent months, from countering drug trafficking and reclaiming stolen oil resources to promoting democracy. However, DePetris argued that the Maduro regime, while authoritarian, presides over a bankrupt state with a severely weakened economy, questioning the notion of an immediate threat to US security.
