Russia launched a massive attack on Kyiv early Friday, killing four and injuring 27. Fires erupted, and residential buildings suffered extensive damage.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescue workers could not retrieve two bodies from the rubble. Authorities continue collecting information about the victims.
Emergency crews treated 27 injured people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strike as a “deliberately calculated attack” on civilians and infrastructure.
Weapons and Civilian Impact
Zelenskyy reported that Russia used 430 drones and 18 missiles, including ballistic and aeroballistic types. Nine people, including a pregnant woman, were hospitalized. Two children, aged 7 and 10, also suffered injuries.
At least 11 multi-storey residential buildings across several districts sustained damage. Debris in Shevchenkivskyi and Holosiivskyi districts sparked fires near a medical facility and a nonresidential building.
Officials urged citizens to remain in shelters while warning of possible power and water outages. Regional head Mykola Kalashnyk said strikes outside Kyiv damaged homes and critical infrastructure, injuring six more people. A 55-year-old man in Bila Tserkva suffered severe burns.
Russian Gains and Military Context
Russian strikes continued as Moscow expanded operations in southern Ukraine. Ukrainian forces withdrew from several villages in Zaporizhzhia amid intense fighting.
Over four weeks, Russia captured nine settlements in Donetsk, eight in Zaporizhzhia, seven in Dnipropetrovsk, and five in Kharkiv.
The Institute for the Study of War reported Russia’s siege of Pokrovsk progressed slowly. Elite drone operators and special forces deployed there faced setbacks as commanders spread resources thinly.
Ukraine has resisted major advances, forcing Russia to incur high casualties and armor losses despite incremental territorial gains.
