Authorities Investigate Potential Coordinated Operation
Danish officials confirmed that drones were observed over four airports from late Wednesday into early Thursday, raising concerns about a coordinated campaign. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the flights as organized and likely executed by a professional operator. Intelligence agencies noted similar drone activity across Europe and suggested possible Russian involvement, although no entity has claimed responsibility.
Airports Experience Operational Delays
The airports impacted included Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sønderborg, and Skrydstrup. Aalborg, which also functions as a military facility, faced the longest flight interruptions, while Skrydstrup, home to Danish fighter jets, was also affected. Authorities reported that the drones flew with lights on but chose not to engage them. Officials emphasized that passengers and the public were not at risk during the incidents.
Denmark Considers Strengthened Countermeasures
In response, Denmark is exploring new legislation to allow critical infrastructure operators to defend against unauthorized drones. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is working with NATO and EU partners to enhance regional security, including discussions about a “drone wall.” Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard indicated that the purpose of the drone flights appeared to be spreading fear and division, underscoring the urgency of bolstering protections at key locations.
