Idrissa Gueye received a round of applause from the Everton squad after apologising for his red card incident during Monday’s win at Manchester United, where he became the first Premier League player in 17 years to be sent off for striking a teammate after slapping Michael Keane.
Everton went on to secure a dramatic 1–0 victory at Old Trafford despite playing with 10 men for most of the match, giving David Moyes his first away win there as a manager. Gueye, who could not speak at half-time, addressed the team after full-time, apologising directly to Keane and the squad for leaving them in a difficult position. His apology was warmly received, earning him applause from teammates.
The incident stemmed from a heated exchange after Gueye’s misplaced pass almost led to a Bruno Fernandes chance. Although Moyes admitted he “likes my players fighting each other”, Everton are still expected to apply internal disciplinary measures, including fines.
Gueye faces a three-match suspension and could also miss further games if called up by Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal’s first match is on 23 December, though Everton are yet to receive official confirmation of his release date.
Gueye also shared a public apology on social media, stating that his actions did not reflect his character and promising it would not happen again.
