OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank Move Forward With Five Additional Stargate Data Centers

U.S. Expansion Targets Increased AI Capacity

OpenAI, together with Oracle and SoftBank, is expanding its Stargate initiative with the launch of five new data-center sites in the United States. Planned locations include Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; Milam County, Texas; Lordstown, Ohio; and a yet-to-be-confirmed site in the Midwest. These centers are expected to push the program’s total planned computing capacity to about 7 gigawatts, as part of a long-term strategy aiming for up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure investment.

    Partner Responsibilities Clarified

The consortium stated that Oracle will oversee development for three of the new locations, while SoftBank will co-lead two others. This expansion brings Stargate’s cumulative commitments near the $400 billion mark. Executives emphasize that the initiative is designed to meet the growing computational needs of advanced AI systems, leveraging Oracle’s data infrastructure, SoftBank’s network reach, and OpenAI’s technological capabilities.

    Local Impacts and Infrastructure Demands

The companies project that construction and operational activities at the new sites will generate tens of thousands of jobs. Local authorities are beginning to assess zoning approvals, incentive packages, and utility infrastructure requirements. Analysts caution that large-scale facilities of this nature will place substantial pressure on regional power grids and water supplies, particularly in Texas and New Mexico. Despite these challenges, proponents argue that Stargate will enhance U.S. leadership in AI while providing significant economic advantages to the host communities.
