Luxembourg Selected for Early-Stage Testing
Chinese autonomous vehicle innovator Pony.ai has entered into a memorandum of understanding with global carmaker Stellantis to jointly produce Level 4 self-driving electric vans for European deployment. The collaboration will start with pilot operations in Luxembourg, paving the way for a broader commercial rollout targeted for 2026. The partnership combines Stellantis’ expertise in electric mobility with Pony.ai’s advanced automation technologies to drive the next phase of smart transportation in Europe.
Electric Vans to Serve Both People and Cargo Movement
Under the new initiative, Pony.ai will embed its autonomous software, sensor systems, and control platforms into Stellantis’ electric light commercial vehicles, including models under the Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel brands. These vehicles are being designed for dual use—moving passengers and transporting goods in urban environments. Initial testing will include human safety drivers as part of the validation and regulatory approval process across European jurisdictions.
Agreement Expands Pony.ai’s Global Operations
The move marks Pony.ai’s first step into the European mobility landscape, expanding its autonomous driving footprint beyond existing programs in China and the United States. For Stellantis, the project aligns with its broader goal of integrating automation across its electric vehicle range. Both companies have confirmed that safety certification, adherence to EU regulations, and strict data protection measures will be key priorities before introducing the technology into commercial service.
