De Niro Voices Frustration With U.S. Leadership
Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro spoke out against Donald Trump following the State of the Union, warning that Trump “will never leave” office and urging Americans to take action. At a National Press Club event called State of the Swamp, De Niro described the country as being run by “a handful of dishonest and greedy and cruel authoritarians” and said he felt “betrayed by my country.” He also criticized Trump’s remarks about elections, saying the president “jokes now about nationalizing the elections. He’s not joking.”
Trump Fires Back on Social Media
In response, Trump posted on Truth Social, calling De Niro “deranged” and “seriously CRIMINAL,” and suggesting deportation for De Niro as well as Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, whom he labeled “lunatics.” Trump compared De Niro unfavorably to Rosie O’Donnell, who he previously threatened with citizenship revocation despite a Supreme Court ruling that prohibits such action.
Public Opinion Reflects Growing Concern
Recent polls show widespread concern over Trump’s leadership. A Reuters/Ipsos survey found 61 percent of Americans think he has become erratic with age, including 89 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of independents. Another poll indicated 79 percent believe U.S. political leaders are too old to represent most Americans, with the average age in the Senate at 64 and 58 in the House. A Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll also reported that only 39 percent approve of Trump’s handling of the presidency. White House spokesman Davis Ingle dismissed the results as “fake and desperate narratives,” highlighting the ongoing polarization surrounding the president.
