Researchers tested VER-01, an experimental cannabis extract, on patients suffering persistent lower back pain. Patients reported meaningful reductions in pain scores within months. Unlike smoking cannabis, the extract delivers controlled doses without creating a “high.” Scientists designed VER-01 to relieve pain while minimizing risks of addiction or serious side effects. Chronic lower back pain affects more than 619 million people globally and remains the leading cause of disability. Conventional treatments like opioids carry high addiction potential, and NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, increase long-term heart and gastrointestinal risks. Effective, safe options remain limited, leaving many patients with inadequate relief.
Clinical Trial Reveals Significant Benefits
The trial enrolled 820 adults who had not responded sufficiently to non-opioid medications. Researchers split participants into two groups: one received VER-01, while the other received a placebo. Patients recorded their pain on a 0–10 scale, with 10 being the worst pain imaginable. After three months, VER-01 users reported an average 1.9-point reduction in pain, compared with 0.6 points in the placebo group. During a six-month extension, VER-01 patients experienced an additional 1.1-point decline, along with better sleep quality and physical function. The study, published in Nature Medicine, demonstrates measurable benefits for chronic pain sufferers. Neuroscientist Jan Vollert noted that the results provide encouraging evidence but emphasized the need for further research to confirm long-term effectiveness.
Safety Profile and Distinction from Recreational Cannabis
VER-01 contains 2.5 milligrams of THC per dose, along with other compounds from Cannabis sativa. Researchers observed mild, temporary side effects, including dizziness, nausea, and excessive sleepiness. Crucially, the study found no signs of abuse or dependency. Experts stress that patients should not substitute VER-01 with smoked cannabis. Vollert compared the two experiences to eating hazelnuts versus eating Nutella: similar origins but entirely different effects. The researchers plan additional trials comparing VER-01 directly to opioids, aiming to provide a safer, non-addictive alternative for chronic lower back pain patients. If future studies confirm its effectiveness, VER-01 could transform global pain management strategies.
